Divi Theme vs Divi Builder Plugin
When you purchase a membership from Elegant Themes, you can see in the dashboard that you have access to both the Divi Theme and the Divi Builder.
The difference between the two is that the Divi Theme includes the Divi Builder, and has everything you need all wrapped into one theme. So when you download theDivi theme, you don’t need to download the Divi Builder as its already included.
The Divi Builder, the plugin itself, you can use on different themes. For example, if you really like another theme because it gives you more options for the header and footer, but you really like the Divi builder, then you can install the Divi Builder plugin on the theme itself and it will work on that site.
When you install Divi on your website, you will see different options in the Divi bar in the dashboard. Within this tab, you will see multiple options to customize your Divi site: upload your logo, add google analytics, custom CSS, etc.
Along with that, you also have the Theme Customizer, which is where you can set up your fonts, customize buttons, you can change the footer font and many more custom options.
The Divi Plugin does give you access to the Divi Library, and the different settings that the Divi Builder offers you, except you don’t get the same options available for the Divi Theme customizer.
To wrap up, if you use the Divi theme you do not need to install the Divi builder as it already comes with it. If you are using another theme and would like to use the options that Divi offers, then you can install the Divi Builder plugin.

Josh,
Ever since I bought Divi and became a lifetime member, I’ve searched and asked exactly HOW to use the DB in another theme, what happens, and what you can do with it.
I think and EXCELLENT blog/tutorial would be if YOU would take any other theme, install the DB and show us what things look like and how you can use the DB to improve on the final output of a different theme and/or how much easier it is to use the DB in another theme to achieve your desired end results.
Or WHATEVER actually happens.
This should be a video tut like Mak does.
Thanks,
Randy
Hey Randy, in the video I do show briefly how once the DB is activated with another theme installed how it looks. Really the biggest difference is that instead of the Divi theme options you can use the divi builder to create the page content then the header, footer, theme settings and style settings will be determined by the other theme in place.
I haven’t used another theme other than Divi since 2014 🙂 You can always play around with it though if you really like another theme’s setting options!
Thanks for this tutorial Josh!
This was actually a question I had as well 🙂
I only worked with the DIVI theme and never tried to use the builder with a different theme.
Awesome. No problem!
This article very simple and useful to read for me… am newbie on divi and i want to learn more about it.
this article clear my confusion about Divi theme and divi builder.
thank Mr Josh 🙂
Josh once again you’re the man! I’ve used all the main builders, Elementor, BB, and Divi, I was looking at an amazing theme I wish I could use Divi on, this totally answers the question! Great post.
Hey,
After reading this I still got this question, If have both options which one to use? Do building website with Divi theme rather another theme with Divi Builder affect page speed and other things?
